MHS Band Marches at Kansas State Fair
September 21, 2009
Fair food, 4-H exhibits, animals, rides, games, and marching-all great things about the Kansas State Fair. The Marching Bulldog Band travelled to Hutchinson Wednesday, September 16th to march downtown and attend the Kansas State Fair.
Judges view the marching bands from atop a downtown building. They are able to easily view the bands as they march below. The judges rate each band on marching performance, playing performance, and general effect. Marching performance includes the band’s intervals and spacing, staying in-step, and instrument carriage. Playing performance includes tone, balance, blend, and rhythms, while the General Effect includes transitions like “horns up” or “horns down,” drum cadences, roll-off, etc.
The band earned Second Division Ratings from all three judges, which is considered an “Excellent.” Director Tobias Wood said, “The band is overall very young. This is a good experience for them to march in front of a crowd and bring home ratings. I’m very proud of the progress they are making.” For their achievement, the band earned a black and silver rosette ribbon.
